The unique flexibility of the Auldern Academy curriculum is reflected in our foreign language program.

We understand that it can be difficult for students to enter a Spanish class mid-year, so our focus is on the cultures of various Spanish-speaking countries rather than intense language training.

Auldern girls learn what it is like to live in a Spanish culture and learn practical language skills.

Spanish I

Bienvenidos a la clase de Espanol! This course is an introduction to the Spanish language and culture for beginners. Emphasis will be placed on beginning vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, reading, understanding spoken Spanish, and an introduction to the culture of Spanish-speaking countries. Spanish in practical, real-life situations will be stressed as will be spoken greetings enabling English-speaking students to make friends and travel in Spanish-speaking countries. Textbook, workbook, and audio-visuals, as well as basic Spanish reference books, will be used as resources.

 

Spanish II

Bienvenidos a la clase de Espanol! This course is a continuation of beginning Spanish on the second level with the same emphases as for Spanish I. Reading, comprehending, pronunciation, and intermediate grammar and cultural understanding are emphasized with an introduction to short writing exercises in the workbook. Textbook, workbook, reference books, and audio-visuals are used as resources.

 

Advanced Spanish

This course stresses advanced comprehension of written and conversational Spanish, using the text, film, and workbook of the Spanish “telenovela” Destinos (developed by WGBH Educational Foundation and McGraw-Hill Higher Education).

In addition to use of the filmed episodes, which enables the advanced student to understand the normal conversation and cultural values of native-speaking Spanish actors in the 52 episodes of Destinos, the text and workbook stress advanced development of grammatical and writing skills. Students also keep a journal of notes and written reports on their weekly outside reading in Spanish and record readings in Spanish to improve pronunciation.
