Auldern’s College EDGE Program
At the request of many of our parents, Auldern Academy started our College EDGE program to serve as a separate, transitional program for high school graduates who need extra support and time ease back into life beyond a therapeutic setting.
The goal of our College EDGE program is to help students realize their potential to be self-sufficient and self-reliant, ready to meet the daily demands of a more traditional college or vocational school setting.
Population
- High school graduates from Auldern as well as other therapeutic programs, ages 17-20.
- Students interested in attaining college coursework credit at a small community college setting while gaining valuable life skills experience
- Students who need emotional and therapeutic support while transitioning from life as a high school student to life as a post graduate.
How It Works
Students enroll in a minimum of 3 college classes at Central Carolina Community College, introducing them to college courses and the “college scene” in a small, encouraging environment. They live in apartments that are attached to Auldern’s dorm, with their own fully equipped kitchen with eating area, bathroom, a living room and bedroom that is shared. The girls will have demonstrated some independent living skills and, more importantly, a level of responsibility to take on the responsibilities of college student life and apartment living. Auldern staff will support them every step of the way – in learning additional living skills, in gaining skills necessary to secure part-time employment while enrolled in the program, to exercising their emotional and social skills in real-world settings.
Over the course of a semester, the information given to students is broken down into four modules covering specific skills to help students succeed upon their completion of College EDGE. These include:
- Budgeting
- Banking
- Housing
- Personal Health
- Recreation
- Transportation
- Safety
- Job Skills
- Advanced Study Skills Course
- Understanding the Law
- Community Resources
- Food Management & Preparation
In College EDGE, Auldern offers:
- A structured apartment living environment with earned privileges
- Weekly Individual, group and family counseling
- Support in choosing & registering for college classes
- Jobs & Internships
- Living Skills Curriculum
- Transportation & Guidance
(Perhaps this last part could be placed in a box and have a picture of two girls beside it…) We have a picture of one of the living rooms in an apartment, too.
